Education Requirements

There are a number of ways to obtain the educational requirements necessary to write our Certification Examination in Cardiology Technology. All Cardiology Technologist programs offered are designed to fulfill the need for trained technologists in a variety of non-invasive diagnostic cardiology procedures.

British Columbia Institute of Technology

The British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) is Canada's leading polytechnic institute providing educational credentials in a wide range of applied health professions. Currently, BCIT offers a certificate and diploma in Non-invasive Cardiology and a post diploma in Invasive Cardiology within the Cardiac Sciences Department. The delivery of their Cardiology Technology program is in a distance education format.  This affords students the opportunity to attain training in cardiology who might not otherwise have the opportunity to attend a full-time day school program.

This program will expose the student to a range of cardiac patients and a variety of the biomedical equipment found within a hospital or laboratory environment.

The program at BCIT offers the opportunity to gain a certificate or diploma upon completion and prepares the student for the CSCT National Certification Examination.

Prior to formal acceptance into the BCIT program, candidates will be required to:

  • Meet all entrance requirements listed on the BCIT website
  • A possible phone interview
  • Strongly recommended basic computer skills in Windows operating systems, and creating documents and worksheets in word processing and spreadsheet programs such as MS Word and Excel
  • 500-word essay detailing interest in the program
  • Work-related or volunteer experience (highly recommended)
  • Visit to a cardiology department
  • Resume, including work history and two personal references

Upon acceptance into the program, students can take courses on a part-time or full-time basis. BCIT has hospital affiliation agreements with institutions all over Canada.

Prior to entering the clinical practicum, students may be required to undergo a criminal record check.

Students may choose specific areas of this program to add to their existing medical technology knowledge and skills, or the entire diploma program may be taken to gain employment in hospital cardiology departments, private physicians' offices, laboratories and industry.
